Found mostly in the northern half of the USA and Canada, a large and striking forest bird with a brilliant red crest. Look for this king of woodpeckers whacking at dead trees in search of wood- boring insects, leaving unique rectangular holes behind. Their nest holes also provide shelter to other birds, bats, and pine martens.
