Introducing: Orchard Farm Mothecombe Knitwear

We love championing local makers at SMALL-FOLK, and Orchard Farm not only creates beautiful pieces to be worn and cherished - they also nurture and restore the local landscape through their regenerative farming practices.

Located above the beach on the South West coast of Devon, Orchard Farm Mothecombe is a family-run regenerative farm established in 2022 by Joe, Jess and their daughter Winnie. What began with a small flock of Coloured Ryelands has grown into a thriving 34-acre landscape of pastures, wetlands, orchards and wildflower meadows, producing premium grass-fed meat and exceptionally soft wool.

Known for their gentle nature, the Ryeland flock provides a beautifully soft annual harvest of fleece, used to create Orchard Farm’s capsule collection of knitted clothing and accessories for adults and children, along with coloured Ryeland yarn for personal projects. The yarn is spun in Cornwall by the Natural Fibre Company and knitted in the British textile heartlands of the Midlands - crafted to be worn, loved and long-lasting.

This vest is the first style produced from Orchard Farm's Coloured Ryeland Flock and is inspired by the Gansy traditions of coastal fishing knitwear with the cable stitch signifying “safe passage” and the moss stitch, representing the texture of the carrageen moss seaweed on which Herring feed and symbolise optimism for a “bountiful harvest”.

A hat which is soft enough to wear next to the skin for all-day comfort and warm enough to shield against chilly coastal breezes, this unisex, one-size-fits-all design makes for a perfect Christmas gift for adults.

Finishing the look, the Adults Fingerless Mitts and (children's) Fingerless Mitts are offered in one easy size. The children’s version fits ages 2-3 through to 6-7, making them a well-worn winter favourite ready to be handed down to siblings and friends for years to come.

Alongside producing wool and meat, Orchard Farm is committed to restoring habitats, planting trees and supporting local wildlife. As a CEVAS-accredited site, it also offers hands-on learning experiences, welcoming schools and community groups to connect with nature and regenerative farming.
